Dirty Data

...and the backlash

Reporter: Today’s protest in Pasadena was all about data – who gets the clean stuff and who gets it dirty. I talked with several protesters today, who are concerned about the distribution of dirty data in residential areas. They’re blaming the ZONE Commission, the public-private partnership responsible for data zone planning.

Protestors: WE WANT CLEAN DATA! (chant)

Protestor: Our neighborhood isn’t zoned for pure data! It’s unjust!

Reporter: Protestors say that as a result, lower-income people, especially children, are getting exposed to unfiltered data early in their lives. Some scientists believe that the amounts of raw data exposed to these people is negatively and irreversibly damaging to their brains and, in children, their development.

Protestor: The government hasn’t been supportive of this neighborhood or other low income areas in this country. Dirty data has been redirected here. We didn’t set these barriers but they’re ruining our lives.

Reporter: A small group of Pasadena residents took aim at the protestors.

Citizen: We pay more tax dollars. Your data’s clean enough! And we’re sick of your dirty data clouds floating into our zones during bad weather.

Reporter: It’s unclear what the future of data will be in this corner of Pasadena. Back to you, Joan.
